Acquired vesicovaginal fistula secondary to ovariohysterectomy in a bitch: a case report Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Gadelha,C.R.F.; Ribeiro,A.P.C.; Apparício,M.F.; Covizzi,G.J.; Vicente,W.R.R..
A seven-year-old bitch was referred for investigation of a two-month history of strangury. Clinical signs had developed within two days of elective ovariohysterectomy. Ultrasonographic and radiographic examinations suggested stump pyometra or cervical granuloma and vesicovaginal fistula. Two laparotomies were performed to repair the adhesions, but no reduction in clinical signs was observed. Medical treatment was performed. Eight months later, the animal was admitted for examination and it appeared to be healthy but still had signs of strangury.

Apoptosis as a prognostic marker in canine mammary tumors by TUNEL Braz. J. Vet. Res. Anim. Sci.
Pereira,Kariny Sanches; Zuccari,Débora Aparecida Pires de Campos; Cury,Patrícia Maluf; Cordeiro,José Antônio.
Apoptosis plays an important role in oncogenesis determining tumor growth and aggressiveness. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between apoptosis, diagnosis and prognosis in canine mammary tumors. Thirty bitches were submitted to tumor extirpation and a method of labeling apoptotic cells, that labels DNA fragments, by terminal deoxynucleotidyl-tranferase (TdT) mediated by 5' deoxy-uridine-triphosphate (dUTP) nick and labeling (TUNEL) was used. The apoptotic cells were counted in ten high power fields (10HPF). Statistical results showed that when there are more than 30 apoptotic cells/10HPF the prognosis is worse (p= 0,0005). Thus suggesting that apoptosis can be used as a prognostic marker in canine breast tumors.

Cystadenocarcinoma simulating hemangiosarcoma of the salivary gland in dog: case report Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Gamba,C.O.; Damasceno,K.A.; Campos,C.B.; Ferreira,E.; Cassali,G.D..
Cystadenocarcinoma is regarded as a rare adenocarcinoma variant in animals. This work reports the case of an 8-year-old female Poodle dog with salivary gland cystadenocarcinoma with morphological characteristics similar to a hemangiosarcoma. Histopathological analysis showed a tumor mass with cystic formations containing a large amount of red blood cells. In order to distinguish these two entities, periodic acid Schiff (PAS) staining and immunohistochemical analysis were carried out with the use of cytokeratin AE1/AE3 (CK) and CD31-specific antibodies. Neoplastic cells were PAS-negative, CK-positive and CD31-negative confirming their epithelial origin. Based on the findings, the diagnosis of high grade cystadenocarcinoma was established.

Detection of mutations within exons 4 to 8 of the p53 tumor suppressor gene in canine mammary glands Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Souza,D.M.B.; Barros,M.G.O.; Silva,J.S.C.; Silva,M.B.; Coleto,Z.F.; Jimenez,G.C.; Adrião,M.; Wischral,A..
Fifteen female canines with mammary tumors and 6 normal females were used to study mutations in exons 4 to 8 of the p53 gene. DNA samples from the tumors, respective adjacent normal mammary tissue and mammary glands from healthy animals were sequenced and analyzed for the presence of mutations. Mutations were found in 71.8% of the samples and the most frequent were missense mutations. The most attacked exons in the mammary tumor were 5, 7 and 8, with 23.4, 31.6 and 23.4% mutations, respectively. Canine mammary tumors are related to mutations in gene p53 and mutations mostly occur in the region of the protein that is linked to the DNA in the cell nucleus, which can change the functionality of the cell and propitiate tumor growth. Despite being...

Effect of deslorelin on the induction of estrus in anestrous bitches Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Lanna,L.L.; Marques Jr.,A.P.; Douglas,R.H..
The efficacy of one or multiple doses of an injectable formulation of deslorelin (a GnRH agonist) was evaluated to induce estrus in anestrous bitches. Thirteen animals composed three groups: group 1 (n=5, single IM injection of 2mg deslorelin), group 2 (n=5, four IM injections of 2mg deslorelin in alternate days), and control group (n=3, four IM saline injections in alternate days). Daily clinical evaluations, sexual behavior, vaginal cytology, plasma progesterone concentration, ovaryhysterectomy and macroscopic evaluation of the uterus and ovaries were done. In group 1, none of the bitches showed signs of estrus, while two developed clinical signs and vaginal cytology of proestrus. In group 2, all animals presented proestrus, four presented estrus, and...

Mast cells and angiogenesis in canine mammary tumor Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Lavalle,G.E; Bertagnolli,A.C; Tavares,W.L.F; Ferreira,M.A.N.D; Cassali,G.D.
The correlation between microvessel density and mast cells density in canine mammary tumors was studied. Sixty-five samples of canine mammary tumors, being 24 benign and 41 malignant, were analyzed. The routine Toluidine Blue staining method was used to assess the mast cells. To evaluate angiogenesis, the immunohistochemical expression of CD31 was assessed. There was no significant difference in either mast cells (P=0.44) or microvessel density (P=0.77) between malignant and benign tumors. A positive correlation was observed between microvessel density and mast cells (r=0.39; P=0.011) in malignant tumors. These results suggest that mast cells may play a role in canine mammary malignant tumors development, promoting angiogenesis, similar to some tumors...

Mummified papyraceous fetuses in the abdominal cavity of an elderly female dog with pyometra Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Voorwald,F.A.; Tiosso,C.F.; Cardilli,D.J.; Toniollo,G.H..
This paper reports on a rare case of fetal papyraceous mummification after asymptomatic uterine rupture in an elderly female dog with pyometra. The patient had a history of mating six months before the examination but no apparent signs of gestation or parturition. Exploratory laparotomy was used to identify a rupture of the left uterine horn and the presence of cystic endometrial hyperplasia and pyometra. Two mummified papyraceous fetuses were observed in the abdominal cavity and had adhered to the spleen, pancreas, intestine and omentum. Ovariehysterectomy and corrective surgery were performed. The patient had remained healthy after uterine rupture until a new estrous cycle and the development of pyometra. Bitches that are 10 years old or more are...

Ovarian cholesteatoma in a bitch Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Oliveira,R.G.; Fukushima,F.B.; Nascimento,E.F.; Santos,R.L..

Prognostic markers of canine pyometra Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Sant'Anna,M.C.; Giordano,L.G.P.; Flaiban,K.K.M.C.; Muller,E.E.; Martins,M.I.M..
The pyometra is a disease that affects middle age and elderly female dogs during diestrus. Hormonal, microbiological, biochemical and hematological aspects are well described. However, few studies have evaluated the role of each in the prognosis of canine pyometra. The aim of this study was to identify markers associated with clinical worsening of dogs with pyometra. We prospectively evaluated 80 dogs with pyometra treated surgically. Group 1 consisted of dogs that were discharged within 48 hours after surgery and Group 2 consisted of those who required prolonged hospitalization or died. The findings of hematological, biochemical and blood lactate levels were compared between groups and variables such as bacterial multidrug resistance, systemic...
